About me
Kia ora & Prego!
I’m Jo Cullen, a New Zealand artist based in the seaside town of Whangamatā, where the surrounding coastline,
light, and landscape continually influence my work.
Working primarily in layered acrylics, I build texture, movement, and depth across the canvas to create abstract and semi-abstract landscapes.
My paintings explore horizon, distance, reflection, and the quiet mood of natural environments, inviting the viewer to connect with a place through feeling rather than detail.
Largely self-taught, I’ve also expanded my skills through workshops in New Zealand, France, and Italy. Time spent painting and travelling abroad — particularly in Italy — continues to shape my approach to colour, atmosphere, and the emotional sense of place at the heart of my work.
Each original painting represents both a place and a feeling — an invitation to pause, reflect, and connect.
Travel, landscape, and lived experience remain constant sources of inspiration, and I look forward to continuing this creative journey.
Thank you for taking the time to view my work.
